Investment management can also be called portfolio management and money management.   Essentially it is a catch-all term for a variety of jobs, all of which involve managing people’s money.  They include dealing and trading, investment analysis and managing assets as well as lots of support functions like marketing, finance/accounts, administration, IT and human resources.

People take their investments very seriously and those people managing their money have to be able to demonstrate a real flair for the work. You will work in close-knit teams with experts in all areas of investing and money management and, of course, there will be client contact – all of which means you need to have good communication skills.

People working in this field are focussed and not shy of hard work but the nature of the business – with constantly changing market conditions - means that you are in the middle of exciting events. Most say you have to work well under pressure, have a good sense of humour and a big personality!

You can find plenty of opportunities in Guernsey to get into the sector from GCSE level providing your grades are generally focussed on relevant subjects like Maths, Economics, English and Business Studies. There’s also a range of degrees but the subjects studied are not as important to most employers as a willingness to learn and a commitment to stick around.

Many employers offer schemes where you can train across a range of disciplines from stockbroking (dealing) to investment sales to asset management. This gives a good grounding in a lot of the areas collected under the investment management banner and will allow you to make an informed choice about which is right for you.

Often working with international clients there are opportunities to travel and most companies offer generous packages to the right people.
