Just as it sounds, international banking is a global sector which involves a number of different financial activities from private banking to lending and treasury to trust and company administration, and investment management. All areas involve looking after people’s money – protecting it and growing it.

One of the attractions of international banking is there are so many different areas to working, all of which have excellent, obvious career progression. With some jobs there is a chance to travel and in all jobs there is an opportunity to work in close-knit teams and interact with people.

The jobs vary and take in a broad range of skills. Within private banking, there are relationship managers who act as the first port of call for wealthy clients, and help ensure their money is where it should be. You could also work on the lending side, providing loans, sometimes worth millions, to individuals and companies. Then there’s treasury, which focuses on foreign exchange dealing and the money market.

There’s no minimum entry requirement but if you’re considering a job in this sector a good range of GCSEs would help. Equally, a good degree result will often mean more than the actual subject studied as it shows commitment and dedication – two qualities respected and rewarded in international banking.

As with most of the other sectors in the finance industry practical knowledge of Word, Excel and Outlook would make you more employable.

It’s an ever-changing environment and banking is one of the pillars on which Guernsey’s finance industry is built. It’s a challenge to work in one of the island’s leading industries but it’s also satisfying to be doing a job that means so much to Guernsey’s future.
