The insurance industry is one that you may not be very aware of but it’s one of the finance sectors that deals closely with people and the intricacies of their lives. If you enjoy communicating with people and taking an interest in others then perhaps the insurance sector might have a career for you.
You will be expected to achieve at least five GCSEs, including Maths and English. For specialist roles and management programmes, ideally you would have A levels or a degree. There’s no requirement to have a sector-relevant degree as many companies offer opportunities to complete professional qualifications while working and they offer study support to achieve this.
Ask anyone in the industry and they will say that being a team player is imperative to doing the job well and getting the most out of it. An ability to solve problems, negotiate and communicate are essential for many roles within insurance and reinsurance as there is lots of client contact.
The sector covers all aspects of life, and the variety of jobs available is equally diverse. From financial advisers, risk assessors, loss adjustors and sales people to underwriters, accountants and investment managers.
It’s the kind of job that takes you into people’s homes and offices on a local level but can also take you into international businesses around the world. You could be helping a family whose home has been destroyed by fire, underwriting film liabilities and visiting film sets or dealing with multi-million pound policies for multi-nationals.
The one common area is the interaction with people - whether it’s your colleagues in the back office who have more of a technical and administration focus or dealing with clients on a daily basis.
No two days are the same and as insurance is a part of our every day lives there is a high degree of job satisfaction.
