This is arguably the least well known sector of the finance industry but it hides some gems!

Careers available span a number of different sectors but can be summed up under two broad titles: actuaries and analysts.

Actuaries are professionals who have specialist skills in pension, insurance and investment matters. They usually have a strong interest in mathematics and train in statistical and accounting processes and procedures, which are used to predict financial outcomes and probabilities.

Analysts can work in many finance fields and provide much needed information about the performance of particular investment options and also analyse the associated risks.

There’s no set path to getting into this field although the dominant personality types appear to be those that are numerate and can think logically, work well as part of a team and enjoy being in a unique industry where the responsibilities are as significant as are the rewards.

A degree is helpful but not essential. This area of the finance sector takes some serious study. Analysts will be expected to keep on top of the latest activities in a number of sectors and will train to keep up to date. Becoming an actuary can take between 3 and 10 years. Most firms in Guernsey will support training and study with days off and even footing the bill for all of the costs.

There’s clear career progression and salaries reflect the level of commitment needed and the knowledge gained.
