Growing up in Guernsey you come across the finance industry probably more than anyone in the UK. It’s all around us. It is the number one industry, in terms of the money it brings into the island, and it’s the biggest employer by far. There are 7,000 people here employed directly by the industry, and that’s not counting all those people who rely on the finance industry for their businesses, like the IT companies, the telecommunications businesses, the retail shops whose customers work in finance. Most of us have someone in our family involved in some way.
So how come it is not a number one career choice for Guernsey students?
OK, let’s be honest. The overall impression of the finance industry might once have been grey suits, dull jobs but with good salaries… that’s not the case any more.
The main reason it hasn’t been the top career choice until now is probably that, even though it’s all around us, we don’t actually know that much about it. Did you know there are nine different sectors that make up the industry? There are thousands of jobs, from bankers to IT specialists, from human resources managers to marketing people, from accountants to lawyers to actuaries. It’s huge.
So now the industry wants to tell you about itself and get you interested in considering a career in finance. The aim is not to “hard sell”, honest. It’s just about letting you know what’s out there and giving you the information you need to make an informed choice at whatever level of education you’re at.
The finance industry, in the shape of the Guernsey International Business Association, has realised that there is a wealth of talent and skill in Guernsey’s home grown students. It’s time to tap into this talent and show you the interesting and different careers available.
The CD-Rom gives you a taste and this website is designed to provide you with the information you need to make those choices.
Here you’ll find detailed information about each sector of the finance industry. You’ll be able to access careers information and find out more about the opportunities for training and sponsorship by a wide range of organisations.
We’ve kept it short and sweet and tried hard not to go over the top about the whole thing.
